There were 180,000 people employed by U.S. biotechnology companies in 2006.
U.S. National BioGENEius Challenge
Overview
The U. S. National BioGENEius Challenge is a competition in which selected winners of both the At-Large and Local BioGENEius Challenge(s) compete and present their research posters and oral presentations in front of a panel of biotech judges. The top ten (10) winners of the U.S. National BioGENEius Challenge will advance to the International BioGENEius Challenge held in Boston, Massachusetts on June 18, 2012, in conjunction with the BIO Annual International Convention.
Students can not apply for the U.S. National BioGENEius Challenge. The U. S. National BioGENEius Challenge is a competition in which selected winners of both the At-Large and Local BioGENEius Challenge(s) compete and present their research posters and oral presentations in front of a panel of biotech judges. Each student will compete with more than 35 students for a chance to advance to the International BioGENEius Challenge.
The panel of U.S. National BioGENEius judges will select the top ten (10) winners of the U.S. National BioGENEius Challenge to advance to the International BioGENEius Challenge. Selected finalists/winners of the U.S. National BioGENEius Challenge will be announced at the U.S. National BioGENEius Challenge Awards Banquet held in Boston, Massachusetts on June 17, 2012.
What kinds of projects are successful?
A model example of the caliber of research done by winning entrants is that of 2011 top winner Prarthana Dalal of Leadwood, Kansas. Prarthana’s project was “Modeling of human non-deletional hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin (HPFH) conditions in β-globin locus transgenic mouse models: The -175 (T to C) and -195 (C to G) A-gamma globin gene point mutations” which investigated hemoglobin genetics and how sequence changes can effect fetal hemoglobin production in mouse models. This can be used to understand treatment mechanisms for sickle cell disease. In recent years, students have done research on groundbreaking topics from optical tweezers to advance detection of resistant bacteria in hospitals to microbial fuel cells.
How to Apply
First, you must apply online to the appropriate At-Large or Local BioGENEius Challenge. If you live in an area where there is a Local BioGENEius Challenge, you should apply to the appropriate challenge. (Example: I am located in Philadelphia, PA. I will apply to the Pennsylvania BioGENEius Challenge.) If there is no Local BioGENEius Challenge located in your area please apply to the At-Large BioGENEius Challenge.
The At-Large BioGENEius Challenge is a competition available to students who are not in areas from which the local competitions draw. These students will apply directly to the Biotechnology Institute through the online application process. Complete an online application. Submissions must be completed at this site by April 15, 2012. Winners of this Challenge will receive a travel award for a student/teacher pair paid trip to Boston, MA from June 16 - 19, 2012.
NOTE: You must apply to either the At-Large Challenge or a Local BioGENEius Challenge to be considered for advancement to the U.S. National BioGENEius Challenge.
Please view the list below to choose the appropriate Local BioGENEius Challenge in your area. Current Local BioGENEius Challenges, as of Decmeber 2011, consists of the following states:
Additional Local BioGENEius Challenges are TBD. Please check back to view additional information about each Local BioGENEius Challenge.
U.S. National BioGENEius Challenge Awards Banquet
The U. S. National BioGENEius Challenge Awards Banquet will honor and celebrate students that represent the future of the biotechnology industry. This banquet will draw an audience of high school students who will be recognized for their outstanding achievements, supporters from industry and foundations, and industry and education community leaders from across the country. It is the ideal venue to congratulate the highest achievers and challenge all present—and the nation—to do what is needed to open the opportunities and raise the level of achievement in science and generally of all students in the nation.
